November Wrap Up

November Wrap Up

November was a very productive month for me and a lot happened. I read a few books, five to be exact and I received four by the end of the month to review. I also started NaNoWriMo but failed since I had a big exam and decided studying was better and started it half way in the month. I did how ever manage to write a few thousand words which is a lot for me. And with that I knew how to o my story and it sort of helped me to manage time for writing which is always good. I'm definitely going to do it again next year.

I finished my second Agatha Christie book and I'm currently slowly reading The Mysterious Affair at Styles. I read Asylum by Madeleine Roux but I don't think Ill get the second one in the series for a while.

Instructions For The End Of The World by Jamie Kain | Book Review

Instructions For The End Of The World by Jamie Kain

I have gotten so much better at taking photos that I got a little carried away this time.
So I got the opportunity to read this book and to review it and I really was surprised because I actually genuinely liked it. It was a fast read for me and that surprised me the most . It usually takes me weeks to finish a book but it only took me three-four days to finish this one. then again it was only 214 pages so I should have finished it in two days but I liked that I took my time with it and read it slowly. Books usually start getting boring if I've been reading them for hours without break or even with a break.

Hello!
I was looking at my blog recently and I just thought that I wasn't posting as much as I would want. So I decided to start something new. I wanted to do a series of post in which I showed off one book every week (probably on Wednesdays because I get less work) and say why I find it interesting or why its on my book collection (since I don't own shelves). Simple and fun.

I had finished reading two great books that were sent to me by Nobrow Press and I wanted to do a review as soon as I got them but the weather hasn't been good here. There's a lot of rain and when there's no rain I have college responsibilities to handle so sadly I haven't been able to take good photos to show these amazingly good books off. But I managed to take one of them inside my bag. I will post a may talk more about these books in the future but for now here is a tiny review.

June to September Haul

June to September Haul

Since June to now, September I have gotten some books. Here they are and I will say a sentence or two about them. Hopefully.

From the top, down.

I also got The Martian by Andy Weir which is not in the photo.

Bridget Jones Mad About A Boy by Helen Fielding
This is one of the books I bought myself and I got it because I knew that when I had the first two books in the Bridget Jones series this one was going to be gone. So, for now, I'm saving it.

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
This is one of my birthday buys and I just wanted it in my little collection. I personally love Gillian Flynn's style, even if I haven't read any. her dark style is just so amazing and I can't wait to start reading it.

Murder on The Orient Express by Agatha Christie
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Both of these, if I'm not mistaken, are a part of the Poirot series and birthday gifts. I just can't wait to dive into them. I loved the Miss Marple tv series and I know I'll love these.

Olivay by Deborah Reed
All In by Joel Goldman and Lisa Klink
The Double Life of Liliane by Lily Tuck

Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman
I love the premise of this story a girl who sees her father being killed and immediately she wants revenge. Dressing up as a boy she goes after the people who killed her Pa.

Sisterhood is Deadly by Lindsay Emory

Silver Lining by Debbie Macomber
The fourth in the Rose Harbor series. Once again a save in my books for when I get the rest.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie
Another one of Agatha Christie book I got as a birthday present.

If I Could Turn Back Time by Beth Harbison
The Tournament by Mathew Reilly

I got Murder On the Orient Express
And Then There Were None
The Mysterious Affair at Styles

But I had some money and got myself two books.
I got Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
The Martian by Andy Weir

I couldn't help myself and already started reading The Martian and so far I've read 36 pages but after I've finished it I'll start The Mysterious Affair at Styles.

Mortal Enchantment by Stacey O'Neale | Review

.
Mortal Enchantment by Stacey O'Neale

It took me a long time to get around to reading this gem but when I did finally start reading it I couldn't stop. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

-------------------------------------

Author: Stacey O'Neale
Title: Mortal Enchantment
Publication: May 20th, 2014 by Phoenix Reign Publishing
Format: Paperback, 230 pages
Source: won in a Goodreads giveaway
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Fiction, Young Adult
Rating: ★★★★

Synopsis:
In Kalin Matthew's world, elementals control the forces of nature. They are divided into four courts: air, woodland, fire, and water. At sixteen she will leave the life she's built with her mortal mother. Kalin will move to Avalon to rule with her father—the elemental king of the air court. Along the way, she's attacked by a fire court assassin and saved by Rowan, a swoon-worthy elemental with a questionable past.
Worst of all, she learns her father is missing.
To rescue him, Kalin will have to work with a judgmental council and a system of courts too busy accusing each other of deceit to actually be able to help her. But, they aren’t her biggest challenge. With the Midwinter’s Ball only five days away, Kalin must take over her father’s duties, which includes shifting control of the elements—power Kalin has yet to realize.
As Rowan attempts to train her, a war looms between the four courts. If Kalin fails, her father will die and the courts will fall, but the betrayal she’s about to uncover may cost her even more...

Thoughts:

I loved this book.
I had a hard time finding time to read this book but, once I got to it I couldn't stop and just wanted to finish it. I wanted to know what would happen to Kalin and Rowan and if King Taron was okay. I was glad I read this book. It did not fail me.

I loved the scene were Rowan was teaching Kalin how to control her powers by the beach. That was too cute. I loved how I could see it in my head when Ariel did Kalin's makeovers. I loved how Kalin would deny that she was obviously looking at Rowan. I know what that's like.

I think most of all I liked the world. Avalon is such an intricate world filled with different being and places. I wished the book had a map like some other fantasy books have. It would have been nice to see where each kingdom was and stuff.

The Shadow Prince by Stacey O'Neale | Review

The Shadow Prince by Stacey O'Neale

I finally got time in between classes to read The Shadow Prince and by the time I finished reading it, I was left wanting more.
--------------------------------

Author: Stacey O'Neale
Title: The Shadow Prince
Publication: March 25th, 2014 by Phoenix Reign Publishing
Format: Paperback, 110 pages
Source: won it on a Goodreads giveaway
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Fiction, Young Adult
Rating: ★★★★

Synopsis:
Every sacrifice has consequences.
Sixteen-year-old Rowan has spent most of his life living among the mortals-learning to control the element of fire, impatiently awaiting the day his vengeful mother, Queen Prisma, will abdicate her throne. When he finally returns to Avalon for his coronation, his mother insists he must first prove his loyalty to the court by completing a secret mission:
Kill Kalin, the half-human, half-elemental daughter of the air court king.
Willing to do anything to remove his mother from power, he agrees to sacrifice the halfling. He returns to the mortal world with his best friend, Marcus, determined to kill the princess. But as he devises a plan, he starts to question whether or not he's capable of completing such a heinous task. And what price he will pay if he refuses?

Thoughts:

To speak truthfully -which I always do- I really enjoyed reading The Shadow Prince. Rowan was such a good character and I loved him. I loved how he was a good friend even with the circumstances.I loved how he fell for Kalin. I loved how he knew that even though he had to do a dark thing he still found a way to make it right.

The action was thrilling and the characters were very interesting. They made me want to know more about them. I hope there's more Rowan & Kalin in the next one.

Vacancy by Jen Lee and Lost Property by Andy Poyiadgi | Book Review

Lost Property & Vacancy

________________________
Updated: April 12, 2016

Nobrow a publishing company that creates mainly comics and graphic novels have been so gracious and sent me two really awesome comics that were absolutely well received and loved by me.
They have a bunch of really cool artist doing really cool things so I totally recommend you give them a visit.

The ones I got are Vacancy by Jen Lee and Lost Property by Andy Poyiadgi and I can honestly say that when I got them in the mail I was extremely excited to see them. I guess its the cuteness of short story through art. Though I did love them more when I finished reading them. I gave them both five out of five in Goodreads and here in this review.

Follow the artists on Twitter. They're really cool people.
Also their sites.

Title: Vacancy
Author: Jen Lee
Publication: June 2nd, 2015 by Nobrow
Format: Paperback, 24 pages
Source: Nobrow
Genres: Comics, Graphic Novel, Fantasy
Rating: ★★★★★

Synopsis:
In a disheveled and ransacked backyard, a dog named Simon has been forgotten by his owners. Simon breaks free and partners with a raccoon and a deer who take him into the woods. But Simon realizes he is not quite ready to live in the wild. And in the abandoned areas of the town strange things begin to happen. . . .
Vacancy explores the ways that animals think; how they internalize their changing environment and express their thoughts, fears, or excitement.

Thoughts:
These are 24 paged comics so the chance they get to make a good story is limited but Jen managed to create a story that I still remember.

For me, Vacancy was like a weird dystopian dream.
Like it's about this dog that can speak and walk on his two hind legs and wear clothes basically he's a human-like dog. and he is stuck in his backyard with nothing to do but look through a hole in his fence into the woods. That's when he meets a raccoon and a deer who take him along with him and they become friends. It was so interesting how all the animals became more human and the humans disappeared so it makes you think that this is what happened after something big and the people either went away or dies. Its a really interesting story for me and I really liked it, I can't say that enough.

Holding a comic in my hands after so many years reminded me of my love of art and how I used to draw almost every day of my life until I stopped. And having grown up around it. As my father left his paintings on our living room walls and my brother loved anime and manga and what he drew.

Visit Nobrow to purchase Lost Property

Synopsis:
Gerald is just your regular everyday mailman. One day, having lost a precious and personal item, he visits his local lost and found. There he finds far more than he bargained for, because in this "self storage", each and every one of Gerald’s lost possessions has been kept and contained.

Thoughts:
This comic is about a mailman who discovers that there is a lost and found place where all the things inside used to belong to him. That they were his lost things.
I love how he really didn't freak out that this store had all the things he had lost since he was a kid but instead chose to do the first thing that came to his mind and something he used to love to do created works of art.
Truly a really cool story.

Looking For Alaska by John Green | Book Review

Looking For Alaska by John Green

I'm just going to say this. I was a little disappointed.

The reason I chose to read Looking for Alaska as my first John Green book was that I thought that the whole idea of it seemed pretty cool but when I started reading it I felt disappointed. Yes. I was still glad I read it to the very end even though the ending was disappointing as well.

So now that I'm writing this I have to think about the things I did like about this book.
1. Alaska's book collection
2. This part:
"I wanted so badly to lie next to her on the couch, to wrap my arms around her and sleep. Not fuck, like in those movies. Not even have sex. Just sleep together, in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I as drizzle and she was a hurricane."
3. Takumi's rapping skills.
4. When Alaska said that her best day was when she was little and her mother went to the zoo.
"I liked the bears. She liked the monkeys. Best day ever."
5.
"Because no one can catch the motherfucking fox." -Takumi
There were parts I liked yes but the overall feel of this book did not make me feel much of anything. I could not relate to any of the characters. Not even a little bit. And I guess that's why I didn't like this book.

Title: Looking For Alaska
Author: John Green
Publication: December 28, 2006, by Speak
Format: Paperback, 160 pages
Source: I bought it
Genres: Young Adult, Coming of Age, Realistic Fiction
Rating: ★★

Synopsis:
Before. Miles "Pudge" Halter's whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the "Great Perhaps" (François Rabelais, poet) even more. He heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.
After. Nothing is ever the same.

My Thoughts:
Like I wrote above. I liked very little parts of this book and for some reason, I felt like I was disappointed with it because I believed it was going to be one thing and it turned out to be something else.
Now I'm not saying that you who are reading this shouldn't read this book on the contrary. Read it and share with me your thoughts on the book. Tweet me if you like. The link is below this.

I had a hard time taking this photo because I couldn't find a good place to take but I sat on the floor in a hallway outside the house and there was this rocking chair that belonged to my big brother and just thought "Why not". Gladly it came out better tan I thought it would.

Paper Town Movie Trailer Thought

These are my thoughts to the Paper Towns movie trailer.

Did I read the book first?
No, Will I? Probably.Whats more funny is that I ad bought the book like a few days before the trailer came out.

Am I looking forward to seeing the movie?
Heck yeah!!

You know I along with many other fans, have been on the bandwagon since John first announced it on his channel. And I though tit was going to be freaking cool if it happened.
you know what I don't really have much words to describe my excitement.

But the thing that's bothering me is -Should I read the book first? I own it and its in my tbr but I've noticed that when a movie is coming out and I read the book first (like with Horns and The Best of Me) I get disappointed with the movie and I'm afraid it might happen with Paper Towns.

Saga Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples | Book Review

Review of:

Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

I had some money in my pocket and a desire to spend it. Thus I got myself my very first graphic novel.

--------------------

Title: Saga Volume 1
Author: Brian K. Vaughan (writer) & Fiona Staples (artist)
Publication: October 2012 by Image Comics
Format: Paperback, 160 pages
Source: I bought it
Genres: Adult, Graphic Novel, Sy-Fy, Fantasy, Romance, Fiction
Rating: ★★★★

Synopsis:
When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.
From New York Times bestselling writer Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina) and critically acclaimed artist Fiona Staples (Mystery Society, North 40), Saga is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in this sexy, subversive drama for adults.

Thoughts:
When I saw this on the displays at Walmart I was in shock. I grabbed it and just held it for a minute before eyeing the cover; back than front. I looked up again and I saw that there was Volume 2 and 3 up there where volume one was. Sadly the only volume 1 they had was a little bend in the top but, I grabbed it and ran.

When I got home I immediately opened this bad boy up and I started to lose sight of reality. The world, the characters, the plot everything sucked me into the world of Saga. By the time I finished reading the last page, I felt immediate sadness. I'm definitely getting volume 2.

It really did spike my curiosity. I wanted to know why the baby, Hazel, was narrating the story. I wanted to know if the Prince and/or the Freelancer were bad guys or good-bad guys. So many things went tough my head when I was reading this. I wanted to know more about the ghost girl too. She seems like a cool chic.

Most of all I think I was in love with the art. You don't know this but, when I was younger I wanted to be an artist. So this made me remember that dream of mine.
Though Fiona Staples art is amazing. I loved the colors and the characters. The way she did this was amazing.

Okay, I might be throwing a lot of compliments and good words but I really do mean what I wrote 100%. I hope someone else feels that way.

PS. Of the characters my favorite was Isabelle.
PPS. She was pretty cool. I also liked the fact that ghost in this is red in color and not the typical white, grey, transparent or even blue.
